Poems by Sanjeev Sethi

Posted by on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 (EST)

In 1997, Sanjeev Sethi published a collection of poems called "Nine Summers Later." These are among my favorites from that book.

Barometer

Third-rate writers
crowd their creations
with adjectives.
Housewives, who lack
evolved sensibilities,
stuff their shelves with knick-knacks.

The Bottom line:
excessive expression
is an index
of inadequacy, real or perceived.

Loneliness Is...

I
Singing
a duet,
all alone.

II
Cooking
a meal,
eating it,
and praising the cook.

Love Letter

I reread your outpourings.
Now I understand why
one doesn't need grammar
to express emotions.

In fact, the mauled language helps.
You could have meant this or that.
I often think about it.

Write to me, Love.
Write more often than you do.
